Calling all Whistler kids! And all of Whistler’s big kids! The countdown is on, so break out the red and white art supplies and get your bikes ready.
Canada’s 136 th birthday is this Tuesday, July 1, is and that can mean only one thing – the Pique Pedal Parade is here again as part of Whistler’s annual Canada Day Parade.
This year Olympic Gold medallist Ross Rebagliati will lead the whole show as the Canada Day parade marshal, winding the floats and parade marchers through the village streets.
So get ready to get on your bikes and join in the fun.
Last year was the inaugural year of the Pique Pedal Parade and dozens of kids decorated their bikes and joined in.
Think red and white and maple leaf. Or go wild with this year’s Canada Day theme, the 2010 Vancouver-Whistler Olympic Bid. The most important thing is to spruce your bike up and make it fit for the celebrations.
There are major prizes up for grabs for the best decorated bikes in different age categories in the Pedal Parade.
The best family entry is a Whistler-Blackcomb Parent Season Pass.
For the kids, there’s a copy of the hottest book on the market, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
For the big kids, there’s a big bike tune-up from Wild Willies worth $80.
There’s also Sugoi bike shirts and bike helmets.
Everyone is invited. Bring your hardcore mountain bikes, your trikes or your rusty two-wheelers.
The parade kicks off at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1. Register for the Pedal Parade between Noon and 1:30 p.m. on Spearhead Drive.
The prize presentation for the best decorated bikes will take place at 1:30 p.m.
The parade will wind down from the Benchlands and ends in Village Square in front of the Pharmasave, where the Welcome Party will take place.
The Whistler Children’s Chorus will sing ‘O Canada’ followed by the cutting of the Canada Day cake.
A selection of musical presentations will take to the stage for the rest of the afternoon.
This year’s Canada Day celebrations set the stage for a party the following morning on July 2, when the 2010 Olympic decision is announced from Prague.
It’s a big day for Whistler and everyone is welcome to come out, show their spirit, and party.
