Speed dating hooks up eligible partners, five minutes at a time

What: Speed Dating

Where: Uli's Flipside upstairs

When: Tonight, Friday, July 18

Ladies: Are you tired of watching those crappy TV dating shows at home on your own? Are you sick of guys leering at you across the dancefloor who never have the courage to say "hi"? Do you long to have someone take you out to Araxi? Well those quiet nights painting your nails over a frozen pizza are no more thanks to a local entrepreneur with an eye for matchmaking.

Ex-Zoomy Computers boss, Tim Allix, understands your pain. The self-confessed single guy has been living in Whistler twelve years and knows only too well how hard it is to hook up. Long term, that is.

The internet and speed dating veteran assures you not every guy living in a ski resort is looking for a mad dash and grab type of arrangement. It seems there is men out there who are just like women - looking for good company and good times, on a regular basis. And Allix has them ready for you.

This Friday night - that's tonight, Allix has assembled a wide ranging bunch of boys ready to play "The Bachelor".

With a concept known as Speed Dating, an equal ratio of men to women will meet in a relaxed and informal setting. Allix will be your host and promises a fun, friendly and no-obligation night out.

"Everyone will be given a name tag and score card on arrival," he explains. "I will put a lady on each table and then one of the men will join them. They then have five minutes to get to know each other before its time for the men to move on. Once each lady has met all the men in the room, the score cards will be filled in and returned to me for collation."

Allix will tally the results and comments and work out which people agreed they both wanted to see each other again. "

If Jane likes Joe and Joe likes Jane, they will each get each other's phone number or email address - whatever they wish to use. It's then up to them individually to make arrangements for a second date."

The concept of speed dating has been gaining momentum around the globe for several years now and has proved quite successful in cities like Vancouver because of its easy, humourous and risk-free atmosphere.

"It's a lot of fun because the concept in itself is quite tongue-in-cheek," said Allix. "It makes everyone relaxed immediately and at the end of the day if you don't like your date, you only have to put up with them for five minutes."

Interest from single men in Whistler has been very strong since Allix started promotions but an actual commitment from women has been somewhat lacking.

"They like the idea but not the cost," said Allix, who has since decided to make the event free for ladies.

"For the men it will cost $40 which will give them two drinks, appetizers and my fee for the dating service. The ladies at this stage are free but will have to buy their own drinks."

If the interest from the female side of the dating pool increases, Allix hopes to expand the concept to more regular meetings, reunion parties and more age-specific pairings.

"At the moment we have a real cross-section of ages coming. From 22 to 55, so women will get a real mixed bag. But hey, that's part of the fun and surprise of speed dating - you never know quite what you're going to get."

Just like a box of chocolates really, and what girl can resist those?

Registration will remain open until 5 p.m. today. The Speed Dating ceremony starts at 8 p.m.

Call Tim Allix to secure your spot now as seating is limited. Only girls are needed to match the numbers for tonight's event, although more events are be planned for the near future. Phone 604-905-0670.
