Strong turnout for Squamish Triathlon

For the second year in a row, the Squamish Triathlon has sold out all 400 open spots. Held as a memorial race for Bob McIntosh, the Olympic-distance triathlon is part of the New Balance provincial series.

Held as a memorial race for Bob McIntosh, the Olympic-distance triathlon is part of the New Balance provincial series. It is limited to 400 racers because temporary highway closures are necessary, although with teams there were more than 560 participants with 57 relay teams taking part.

The number of Whistler athletes competing was higher than ever, and six locals wound up on the podium for their respective age groups, including three gold medals.

Paul Suter won the men’s 40 to 44 age group, and finished eighth overall among the men. His time of 2:11:01 was more than four minutes faster than the next athlete in his group.

Paul Nicholas was second in the men’s 35 to 39 race and 17 th overall with a time of 2:13:22.

Daniel Havens was third in the men’s 45 to 49 group, finishing in 2:15:14. He was 20 th overall

Marie-Anne Prevost was second in the women’s 30 to 34 race, and 13 th among women with her time of 2:27:26.

Greg Sandkuhl was first in the men’s 55 to 59 group and 71 st among men with a time of 2:27:34.

Mae Palm, was first in the women’s 60 to 64 race, besting the three-hour mark with a time of 2:55:29.

Also from Whistler:

David Higgins was 12 th among men and fourth in the 30 to 34 group with a time of 2:13:04.

Bob Deeks was ninth in the 40 to 44 group with a time of 2:22:32.

Sandy Treagus was 13 th in the men’s 35 to 39 race, finishing in 2:26:11.

Caroline Blewett finished in 2:29:00, and was 19 th overall among women, and eighth in the women’s 25 to 29 division.

Glen Murray finished 16 th in the 25 to 29 group with a time of 2:31:25.

Marilyn Hellier was seventh in the 35 to 39 division in 2:35:24.

Jacalyne Sherlock was two spots back of Hellier in the same age group with a time of 2:37:24.

Jackie Fulton was 17 th in the same division in 2:45:31.

Cam McCullough was fifth in the men’s 55 to 59 group in 2:50:09.

Sylvia Reed was 18 th in the 25 to 29 group with a time of 2:57:40.

Ian Reith was 29 th in the men’s 40 to 44 group in 2:59:26.

Greg Newton, racing in the same group, was 31 st , just missing the three hour mark with a time of 3:00:01.

Mike Charuk finished in 3:06:50, racing in the men’s 35 to 39 division.

Triathlon veterans Brandi Higgins and Francis Fournier typically do pretty well, but both bowed out of the competition on the bike section with flat tires.

The top Squamish athlete was Gord Addison, a friend of Bob McIntosh’s, who was third overall in 2:02:15, winning the men’s 35 to 39 race.
