Mt. Currie will be more than solid rock next Friday night. It’ll be blues, roots and acoustic rhythms too.
The guys behind Mt. Currie music favourites, the JJ Blues Band, are putting on an all-night jammin’ jamboree like no other with their own local legends and Whistler’s finest joining together for some musical mayhem at the base of the mountain.
The Led Zeppelin tribute band, Whole Lotta Led will headline the event, with JJ Blues Band, Tipta7 and Gordon Rutherford sharing the bill from 7:30 p.m. till 4 a.m.
Organizer Leroy Joe said the event, in its second year, will once again be a case of everybody welcome.
"There’s not a lot to do around here and it gets pretty dead after dark so with the weather so good, it was time to throw a party," Joe said. "We had about 500 people come to the last one in 2001. This time though we didn’t just want to have local acts. We wanted to throw some new guys into the mix and Gordo and the guys from Whole Lotta Led are very well respected."
That much is true. Gordo plays to appreciative crowds where ever he goes with his wide ranging R&B acoustic set. From the ’50s to today, he can play all the songs you know and love.
Whole Lotta Led have been wowing Whistler for almost a year now, with last week’s sell-out Boot Pub show testament to their pulling power. With Grateful Greg from the Hairfarmers utilizing his powerful vocals in honour of Robert Plant and Creekside Phil Richards giving it his all as guitarist Jimmy Page, it’s a spectacle to behold. Add to that the fine workmanship of top local players J.P Trottier and Tom Rimmer on bass and drums respectively and you can close your eyes and take the stairway to heaven.
The JJ Blues Band is a family band made up of Joe’s uncles and cousins. They’ve played on and off together for almost 12 years, raising the roof with covers and originals that will have you dancing till dawn.
Tipta7 is "an old rock guy that everyone here loves," said Joe. "He started out in the ’50s and was one of the first to bring rock to Mt. Currie. He gave us Elvis and Buddy Holly and has pretty much played the reserve circuit ever since. He has a real unique style with this raspy voice and a well loved guitar. He’s great."
Tickets to The Show, which starts at 7 p.m., are $10 from at the door to the Stompin’ Grounds on the Lake Lillooet Rodeo grounds at Mt. Currie. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. and will go till late.
