Library birthday

On Aug. 27, 1986, the Whistler Public Library opened its doors to the community. Construction on the facility in the basement of municipal hall had started in January and the Rotary Club volunteers finished the 1,400 square feet in record time.

We quickly outgrew that location and moved into the old post office trailers in December 1994. We doubled our space to 2,800 square feet and doubled our business as well.

The board of trustees and staff started planning a new permanent facility in 1992 and hoped to be in it in 1998. Unfortunately we have not been able to adhere to our timeline. In 1999 the municipality hired B.C. Buildings Corporation to prepare a scope document for the building program. The recommendation was to build a 12,000 square foot library in order to accommodate our population. The provincial average for a population of 9500-10,000 is a 12, 000 square foot facility. We are hoping that mayor and council will soon make a decision regarding the construction of this much needed facility and that construction will begin in spring 2004.

We invite everyone to come and check out the library (and some books, videos, DVDs, CDs or magazines) on Saturday, Aug. 30 and to share some birthday cake with us from 2 p.m. on.

Summer Reading Club

"Set the stage — Read" was the name of this year’s Summer Reading Club. Over 124 children registered for one of the three programs offered on Wednesdays for 3-9-year-olds. Total attendance for all 19 events was 361.

Many thanks to our co-ordinators Agnes Gorgon, Children’s Librarian and Beverly Newell, Community Librarian, students, Kim Fenwick, Jennifer Pringle and Sally Reid and volunteers Tara Newell and Zendai Kashino for all their work in organizing the events.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Marketplace IGA and the Grocery Store for the wonderful food they donated for the wind up costume party and to the Royal Bank for their sponsorship of the reading medals.
