: Friday, Sept. 12.The comedy festival promises fake celebrity women by way of a slender blond from down East.
On the flipside is tonights show at the GLC, which features a California trio of real women, flaunting ample figures.
Voluptuous jump-blues singer Candye Kane, known as much for her colourful past as she is for her sassy, brassy singing style, has chosen plus-size burlesque duo the Original Fat Bottom Revue to kick off the evening.
The acts description is not cheeky irony. Take it literally. Creator Heather "Ms DeMeanor" McAllister is no celery stick-nibbling waif and shell have you know shes proud to tantalize, tease and titillate in classic burlesque style.
"Coming to (Whistler) will be traditional womens burlesque, but non-traditional because were both big women," says McAllister.
"Although if you look back long ago, its actually very traditional. A lot of women, when burlesque started out of the Vaudeville tradition, were built more like us."
While the duo ends up wearing little more than their birthday suits, McAllister says there is a different energy at a burlesque show than at a strip club.
"Women really like my show," she says. "Its more of a tease, more fun than let me shake my crotch in your face."
"I dont mean to denigrate it, Im totally in solidarity with women who strip in clubs. I think everybody should have an opportunity to make a living," shes quick to add.
Right on, sister.
Big Burlesques Original Fat Bottom Revue will be making their living tonight at the GLC, so bring a handful of bills. Tickets $15, available in advance at Bestsellers and Whistler Entertainment and at the door.
