Seasons pass, Chateau stay up for grabs
The show, and the prizes, must go on.
The 10th annual West Side Wheel Up mountain bike race was postponed and then cancelled this year due to the extreme fire hazard and backcountry travel ban.
Although organizer Phil Chew wasnt able to reschedule the race, he still hopes to raise money for B.C. Disabled Ski Team, which trains in Whistler and has been the beneficiary of the West Side Wheel Up for the past two years.
People can help out by buying raffle tickets and attending a party at Tapleys Pub on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. The cost of admission is $5, and will include hors douevres.
The draw prizes available include a seasons pass, two nights of accommodation at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler with a $200 gift certificate to the Rimrock, and more.
"We wanted to see something happen to recoup our expenses for not having the race the first time around, and because its a good opportunity to raise money for the B.C. Disabled Ski Team," said Chew, who is the head coach.
"Of the 13 members of the national disabled ski team, seven are from the B.C. program. Were starting to train the athletes that will represent Canada in the 2010 Paralympics."
Whistlers Brad Leanna recently made the jump from the B.C. team to the national team, and is leaving for Europe next week to train for the upcoming season.
"Every dollar we raise helps," said Chew.
