Even though the Whistler Film Festival is still a month away, the online box office is open to those who wish to jump the queues with a festival pass.

While tickets to individual screenings will be on sale Nov. 17, film buffs can capitalize on early bird discounts currently offered on several different pass options, which are either restricted to screenings, or include the concurrent Filmmaking Forum workshops and gala events.

Festivalgoers that purchase before Nov. 17 will save up to 20 per cent on passes ranging in price from $45 to $251.

The passes are only available in limited quantities. The online store is a feature new to this year’s festival and organizers are predicting it will increase chances of passes selling out well in advance of the first screening.

This year’s festival takes place Dec. 4-7 and will present more than 40 different feature and short films. The lineup is currently being finalized.

Passes can be ordered online at www.whistlerfilmfestival.com or by calling 604-938-3323.

Script to Screen workshops put youth behind the camera

Scorsese, Spielberg and Coppola had to start somewhere.

Youngsters showing a flair for film direction can take their first celluloid step with the Script to Screen for Teens youth film workshops next weekend and check out the results at the Whistler Film Festival.

Organized by Pint-Size Productions, a local television production company specializing in youth hosted and oriented programming, the workshops have room for a maximum of 15 participants, up from last year’s 10. The directors-in-training will be divided into three crews and guided through the process of producing a short film. The workshops are currently restricted to kids 12-18 years old, but Pint-Size’s Cecilia Davis says a pre-teen group will be added if enough interest allows.

This year’s participants will also benefit from funding allocated by the Whistler Arts Council to the Whistler Film Festival for youth programming, a portion of which has been donated to the workshops, which are moving from the cramped quarters at the Cable 6 studios to Whistler Secondary School.

The finished films will be screened as part of the Youth Whistler Film Festival next month and broadcast on Whistler Cable 6 local television and Shaw Cable 10.

Script to Screen for Teens takes place during the weekend of Nov. 8 and 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost per participant is $250, which includes a ticket to the Youth Whistler Film Festival. Call 604-892 9279 for more information.
