Fairmont Chateau Whistler reaches out to flood ravaged communities

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Foundation handed a cheque for $10,000 to the Squamish Emergency Services Society last weekend.

The cheque was delivered by a team of hotel volunteers who spent part of their weekend assisting the residents of Squamish with the clean up efforts following one of the area’s most devastating floods.

Another cheque for the same amount will be given to the Pemberton Relief Efforts at another volunteer event planned in the near future.

While the foundation funds are normally given to select non-profit community groups in the Sea to Sky Corridor, colleagues of the hotel unanimously agreed that a portion of the funds raised this year should be given to the flood relief efforts.

"The flooding last month in our communities touched each and every one of our lives," said Kevin Toth, General Manager of The Fairmont Chateau Whistler. "We’re pleased that we were not only able to provide urgently needed funds, but also able to show our support by lending a helping hand to those who needed it."

The hotel has also just been named the ‘World’s Leading Ski Resort’ at the 2003 World Travel Awards in New York City.

The awards were established in 1993 to acknowledge and celebrate excellence in the world’s travel and tourism industry. Thousands of votes are cast for the award by travel professionals from 80,000 travel agencies in over 200 countries worldwide.

"To continually receive awards and recognition from around the world is truly rewarding," said Toth.

"The award demonstrates that The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is able to compete on the world stage as a luxury hotel in a first class destination."

Search and Rescue Fundraiser a success

The Garibaldi Lift Company was, once again, the venue for Whistler Search and Rescue Society’s annual fundraising event held on Saturday, Oct. 25th.

The event and a recent raffle raised $15,000.

This year attendees dined on a sumptuous six course menu prepared by Chef Rob Feenie and his staff of Vancouver’s Lumiere Restaurant. Each of the courses was paired with a selection of fine wines from Robert Mondavi’s Family of Wines and included such delicious items as Sake and Maple Syrup Sablefish paired with Arrowood Grand Archer 2000 Chardonnay.

The silent auction included a wide selection of items and featured a wine tour package to the Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One plus accommodation at the Napa Valley Lodge, air ticket and expenses.

Thanks go to the United States Consulate, Chef Rob Feenie, the Robert Mondavi Family of Wines, Whistler Blackcomb Mountains and all those who contributed to make the evening such a success.
