Whistler’s Dirty new record store

DJs and fans of breaks, hip-hop, and drum ’n’ bass music will want to make their way down to Function Junction soon to check out Dirty Beats, Whistler’s new and only record store.

DJs and fans of breaks, hip-hop, and drum ’n’ bass music will want to make their way down to Function Junction soon to check out Dirty Beats, Whistler’s new and only record store.

Dirty Beats is run by Lindsay Phillips and Mike MacLean, music aficionados who got acquainted through Whistler’s tight jungle ’n’ breaks club scene. Phillips had been involved in Whistler’s last Function Junction record store, Vinyl Lab, a spin-off of a store of the same name in Vancouver that closed in August. The end of the parent store meant the end for Vinyl Lab Whistler one month later.

Phillips, however, was undaunted in her vision to provide Whistler DJs with a source for music and a friendly place to gather. Joining with MacLean was an opportunity to make a fresh start, she says.

The store will stock hip-hop, breaks, house and drum ’n’ bass vinyl and CDs by local DJs and bands, along with clothing by Traphic and the store’s signature line. Phillips says Dirty Beats is also carrying toques and jewelry handcrafted by locals and is open to proposals from other community artisans.

Celebrate the store’s official opening at Jungle ’n’ Breaks night at Garfinkel’s this Tuesday, which features duelling DJ duos Marky Mark and Toddski up against Jungle Souldier and Plastic Surgeon.
