The Whistler Secondary Storm senior girls volleyball team battled its way in the provincial A Championships in Castlegar last weekend, after beating several teams from Vancouver in zone competition.

This was the first time a Whistler team had advanced past the regionals to compete against the top teams in the province in their division. The A division is for schools with 500 students or less.

It took a few weeks to raise the money to get to Castlegar, and once there they showed a lot of skill and class. They didn’t win a lot, but they were competitive in every game and earned the Most Sportsmanlike Team award.

"They played the best volleyball of their season, and really enjoyed the experience as a team," said coach Sue Oliver, who ran the team along with teacher-sponsor Ali Williams.

"Referees, coaches and tournament officials commented several times on how impressed they were with the team’s attitude and perseverance."

Oliver complimented the players on their breakthrough performance, and for helping to generate the funds to get to the provincials. Big thanks go to Ken Quon at IGA for sponsoring the hot dog barbecue, Blackcomb Plumbing and Heating for a $200 cash donation, and the girls for organizing the bake sales.

Parent drivers Bob Daniels and Chuck Kingzett also made this trip possible.

The senior girl’s volleyball team is Claire Daniels (team captain), Candice Mooney, Jessica Meadows-Dow, Alix Browne-Munz, Jordan Kobelka, Lilli Baker, Meagan Lande, Brittany Kingzett, Christine Inniger, Becky Bennett and Eri Yokoyama.
