Cross country events come to Whistler and Pemberton

The Coast Cup Series was created by the Strathcona Nordics at Mount Washington three years ago to give Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island cross-country skiers a chance to race in events that were closer to home.

This year the series gets underway in Whistler and Pemberton with a race in Whistler on Saturday, Jan. 31 and another event in Pemberton the following day.

The event is grassroots, according to organizer Cherly Morntingstar of the Whistler Nordics, but follows the distances set for specific age groups by Cross Country Canada and Cross Country B.C.

"This is a great even for those not used to competing, as the distances are short," said Morningstar. "As well, it's right in our backyard."

The event is also unique because it is a classic technique event, which Morningstar feels can be more challenging than skate skiing from a technical perspective.

The Atoms, aged eight and younger, will complete a 500 metre course. The masters men will complete two laps of a 5 km course. Registration fees vary from $5 to $15, depending on your age category.

Competitors are expected to come from as far away as Vancouver and the Mount Washington area to take part, although Morningstar would like to see a strong local turnout as well.

The Whistler Nordic Rabbits and Spud Valley Nordics will be involved, and the organizers are hoping to see a strong youth turnout.

The race gets underway in Whistler at 9:30 a.m. at the Lost Lake Warming Hut, with bib pick-up starting at 7:30 a.m. Parking is limited so car pooling and drop-off arrangements are recommended.

The deadline for submitting your entry is Thursday, Jan. 29 at 9 p.m. Contact Cherly Morningstar at [email protected] or fax your application to 604-932-3418. E-mail entries are preferred, and you can also send your application by regular mail to Whistler Nordics at 6371 Corral Place Cr., Whistler, V0N1B6. You can also contact Morningstar at 604-932-3438.
