School Trustee Andrée Janyk declared the Spring Creek Community School officially open for learning after cutting the ceremonial ribbon last Friday morning.
"(It’s the) proudest moment I’ve had as a school trustee," she said, beaming at the students sitting on the shiny new gym floor.
The opening ceremony focused on the co-operative effort among many partners to make the Spring Creek School at reality.
"To me this is just another example of how the community comes together," said MLA Ted Nebbeling, after Friday’s ceremony.
"This is how Whistler was developed over the last 20 to 30 years."
Among the key players in the development were Intrawest, the municipality, the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation and the Whistler Realtors’ Association: Festival of Lights.
Spring Creek Parent Advisory Council President Barb Leigh recognized each group with a special plaque.
The school’s 5.5 acre site was donated by Intrawest as part of the company’s master plan to develop the south side of Whistler.
The municipality approved the deal more than five years ago.
More recently the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation wrote the school a cheque for $60,000. This money will be divided two ways with $35,000 going towards the playground and the remaining $25,000 going towards computer equipment.
In addition, a cheque for $10,000 came from Whistler Realtors as part of their annual Festival of Lights fundraising activities. That money will go to library furnishings and instruments for the new music program.
"It takes a village to raise a school and Whistler is an amazing village," said Leigh.
The opening ceremony was followed with school tours and cake for everyone.
