February is a great month for Whistler’s hockey fans with a pair of tournaments featuring former NHL players and the top local talents.

Canucks Alumni Game

The puck drops on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Meadow Park Arena with a Canucks Alumni Game hosted by the Whistler Minor Hockey Association (WMHA).

This match up will pit former members of the Vancouver Canucks against all-stars from the Whistler Hockey League in a fun game to raise money for the WHMA and the Burnette Family Fund. The sponsors include the RMOW, Coca Cola and the Custom Fit Communications Group.

The cost is $20 for families, $10 for adults, and $5 for kids 16 and younger. In addition to the main event, there will be a mini game with Whistler’s young skaters, as well as chances to compete for draw prizes and win a 50/50 draw.

Tickets are available from WMHA players and at the door on game day.

The action gets underway at 6:30 p.m.

The Keg Sea to Sky Challenge

This hockey tournament should be huge, with a game in Whistler on Saturday, Feb. 21 and another game in Vancouver the following day.

This event is a fundraiser for Canadian athletes and Olympians, and features a variety of hockey legends, celebrities and athletes.

The Hockey Heroes team is made up of former NHL stars, including Cam Neely, Bryan Trottier, Kirk McLean, Dave "Tiger" Williams, Russ Courtnall, and "King" Richard Brodeur. NHL referee Ron Hoggarth will officiate the game while rock star manager Bruce Allen takes on the role of timer and scorekeeper.

The Hollywood North Stars celebrity team is continuing to grow, but already includes the Hanson Brothers from the movie Slap Shot, Olympic gold medallist Ross Rebagliati, comedians Brent Butt and Peter Kelamis, singers Michael Burgess and Barney Bentall, The Odds guitarist Craig Northey, Global TV news anchor Steve Darling and Larry and Willy from Jack FM’s morning show.

In net for the Hollywood North Stars is UBC Thunderbirds goalie Chris Levesque, who made headlines when he was called up by the Vancouver Canucks recently. Hockey Hall of Fame-er Howie Meeker will be the Stars’ head coach.

Tickets to watch the game in Whistler are $20.10, but real hockey fans have the opportunity to purchase MVP tickets worth $185.10 that include a gala dinner with the players and tickets to Comedy Night in Canada. Comedy Night in Canada is a stand-up comedy show that focuses on hockey and features Dennis Hull from the legendary ’72 Summit Series.

Club Seat tickets to the Vancouver game are $52.10, which includes a sports memorabilia silent auction and a special autograph signing session.

All the proceeds from the event will go towards the Athletes at Work Legacy Fund, which supplements athletes’ incomes to allow them to maintain a reasonable standard of living while training for the world stage. The Fund has the full support of the 2010 LegaciesNow.
