Whistler Arts Showcase has literary leanings

The library is very pleased to participate once again in the Celebration 2010 Whistler Arts Showcase that will run from Feb. 7 to March 1, 2004.

The library is very pleased to participate once again in the Celebration 2010 Whistler Arts Showcase that will run from Feb. 7 to March 1, 2004. The cultural event is generously sponsored by the British Columbia Provincial Government, the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Whistler Arts Council.

The Showcase will also feature the Whistler Dance Academy, Whistler Film Festival Society, Whistler Photographic Society, Whistler Writers Group, Whistler Museum & Archives Society, Whistler Naturalists, individual artists, performers and singers from Whistler and the Sea to Sky and Lower Mainland region.

The library has organized several events for the Showcase.

On Saturday, Feb. 14 th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. we will have a special storytime for Valentine’s Day. "Hearts and Kisses" will feature stories, songs, rhymes and a "lovely" craft for 3-6 year olds. Space is limited so please pre-register by calling Agnes at 604-932-5564.

For 9-12 year olds, there will be an Olympic-themed Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, Feb. 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. It promises to be an evening full of questions, clues and adventure. Participants will use their detective library skills to locate clues and win amazing prizes. Refreshments will be provided by the library. Space is limited, so pre-register by calling Agnes at 604-932-5564.

There will be an Olympic-themed Charades for 13-16 year olds on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. This will be lots of fun for those budding actors, singers and dancers in our community. Pizza, prizes and drinks will be provided by the library. On Thursday, Feb. 19 th at 8 p.m. at MY Place, we are pleased to welcome Colin Angus, author, adventurer, and filmmaker. He will be presenting a slide show of photographs taken during his descent of the Yenisey River in Mongolia and talking about his book Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the world’s last unchallenged river which was published in the fall of 2003. Tickets will be on sale at the library and through Ticketmaster at MY Place. Adults: $7 and Students: $4

We are very pleased that the winners of our Young Adult Writing Contest held last fall will be reading from their stories in a public forum on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at MY Place. They will then have their stories published in the Literary Leanings Anthology produced by the Whistler Writers Group.

The Writers Group will be featuring local and out-of-town authors at their Literary Leanings gala events on Feb. 22 & 23 at Uli’s Flipside at 8 p.m.

The library carries the works of the following visiting writers: Kevin Chong author of Baroque-a-nova and Karen X. Tulchinsky author of Love ruins everything, Love and other ruins and The five books of Moses Lapinsky . Other authors who will read at the events include: John Moore, Brandi Higgins, Stephen Vogler, Lara Bozabalian, Stella Harvey, Rebecca Wood Barrett, Sara Leach, Lisa Richardson and Jennifer Cowan.
