Six years to go before 2010 Games come to town

Six years from now Whistler will be in the throws of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

There will be events every day, medal ceremonies every night and a plethora of cultural celebrations.

To mark the anniversary Vancouver and Whistler hosted a series of events in both places yesterday.

There was cake and sport celebrities outside of the 2010 information office in Whistler and a special fundraising luncheon in Vancouver for aspiring Olympians and Paralympians.

And last night Whistler launched the first performance marking the partnership between the Vancouver 2010 organizing committee, the municipality and the artists of the Sea to Sky corridor at a private event at Millennium Place.

"The theme of it is where sport and culture meet," said Maureen Douglas, Sea to Sky programs manager for the 2010 Transition team.

"We really want to promote that objective. It is a really a big culture event too and Whistler is really well on its way to participating in that.

"Over the next six years we have an opportunity to share our successes both on the podium and on the stage and watch that grow."

And, said Douglas, the hope is that the 2010 Games will act as lever to draw world class cultural performers to the resort as the event draws ever closer.

Meanwhile the expected announcement of who will be the CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games has been delayed until the end of February.

The OCOG board was expected to make the announcement Wednesday at its regularly scheduled meeting but the CEO search task force said that it needed more time.

So far the only publicly declared candidate is bid hero John Furlong.
