Deadline today for entries

After a delay due to a change of venue, the 27 th annual Whistler Nordics Loppet cross-country ski race will take place this Sunday, Feb. 22.

This event is open to skate or classic cross-country skiers of all ages and abilities, with opportunities to compete in the age categories on a 30 km course or in the recreational category on a 15 km course.

There will also by a Jackrabbits race around the golf course, with a 4 km race for kids 7 and younger, and a 6 km race for kids 8 to 13. Last year more than 80 Jackrabbits took part.

Today (Feb. 20) is the final deadline to register for the race. You can pick up a copy on the Whistler Nordics Web site at www.whistlernordics.com, or at any of the local cross-country shops – Sportstop, Wild Willies, Cross Country Connection, and Whistler X-Country Ski and Hike.

Although things were a bit confusing with the venue change, organizer Tom Barratt says it’s shaping up to be a good day.

"We had to set up a whole new place for the race and work out the kinks – get our route groomed properly, make sure everything works, planning the awards ceremony, arranging things like catering," said Barratt. "I do like this spot, and think it will work out very well."

The age category racers will start on the 15 th fairway at Nicklaus North and follow the lake around over the tracks and into the Lost Lake trail network.

Entry to the race is $35 for adults, $15 for youth 14 to 17, and $10 for youth 13 and under, which includes a catered lunch, draw prizes and an awards ceremony. Extra lunch tickets can be purchased for $10.
