Whistler’s a town with nightlife. Translation: a bar for every occasion. But even the most dedicated bar star can get tired of the scene every now and then.

But what do you do if you’re a vibrant youthful person that wants to go out and have a good time, but isn’t in the mood for the bar?

Enter LUNA.

Best known for its outdoor movie series in Lost Lake Park last summer, LUNA’s initiative was to provide alcohol-free evening entertainment alternatives as a way to combat noise levels and violence in Whistler Village.

The program was run initially as a division of Whistler Community Services. After a brief hiatus for last year’s down season autumn months, LUNA regrouped, breaking from WCS by hiring it’s own director, Kiran Pal.

Pal recruited 11 volunteers who received training in event management techniques to help the various LUNA nights run smoothly.

The organization is launching a new LUNA season this Thursday evening with a session of Triple Threat, a combination of martial arts, yoga and breakdancing taught by Cole Manson of the Whistler Martial Arts Centre. Interested participants require an open mind and loose clothing. The session takes place at the Spruce Grove Fieldhouse and will be set to hip-hop and break beat tracks by DJ Frank Spinatra.

Admission is the best deal in town at $2 and the event is open to everyone from mature teens to young-at-heart thirtysomethings – your basic bar-aged crowd.

Triple Threat begins at 9 p.m. and lasts until 1 a.m. and like every LUNA event, it’s 100 per cent alcohol free.

Look for a different LUNA event every Thursday evening until the program takes a spring hiatus in May.
