Myrtle Philip school searches for artists

Myrtle Philip Community School is looking for local artists to come into the school and lead students through an artist-in-residence project.

"The purpose of the residency is that we want the students to become more aware that art is everywhere you look," said Myrtle Philip parent Allison Van Gruen, who is helping to oganize the project.

"(Art) is all around us and it would be a really dull world to live in if there was no art."

The school has run successful programs in the past. Students have made papier maché birds, done print-making, enjoyed dancing workshops and learned about drumming.

Principal Ron Albertin said the project also works to bring the whole student body together because they are all working on the same concept.

"I see this as something they can be proud of and something they can put up in the school and it can stay up for quite a while," said Albertin.

Any artist applying, said Van Gruen, must be familiar with working with elementary aged kids and must have an idea in mind for the two-week program. The position is paid.

It would also be useful to have a list of supplies needed and an approximation of the cost.

In the past the program has run for two weeks. It is hoped that this year’s residency can take place in April or early May at the latest.

Any artists interested in doing the project should contact Van Gruen at IVG@telus.net or call 604-932-2396.

Myrtle Philip’s Parent Advisory Council has already pledged to support the program financially. Parents may be asked for a small donation as well.
