One of the most popular and anticipated events at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival, the 72 hour Filmmaker Showdown, is now accepting pre-registration.

Beginning on April 16, event teams have 72 hours to create and produce a 4.5-minute film. Now in its third year, the event has gained a reputation as a true test of creativity, stamina and resourcefulness for the local independent film community.

Six finalists will be selected by a review panel for public screening during a gala event on April 21, after which the Best In Show award will be chosen by judges.

The event has attained sponsorship by electronics giant Panasonic this year, raising the stakes significantly. The winner takes home a professional-grade camera recorder valued at $5,600 and will be included in a television special which is slated to screen nationally on Global TV in December 2004.

Last year’s festival winner was Weekend Warrior by go-go dancer/DJ Ace MacKay-Smith, who used Barbie dolls to tell the story of a hapless would-be Cassanova.

Entry details, contest rules and registration forms are available at whistler2004.com/film_overview.html. Pre-registration from now until April 12 guarantees entry in the contest. There will be a limited number of last minute entry spots available at a mandatory meeting on April 16.
