Burgers for a quarter marks McDonald’s first anniversary in Pemberton

Only months after a 10-cent hamburger deal left most Whistlerites clambering for the front door of McDonald’s in Marketplace, the restaurant owner has announced another burger campaign.

Only months after a 10-cent hamburger deal left most Whistlerites clambering for the front door of McDonald’s in Marketplace, the restaurant owner has announced another burger campaign.

Tom Horler owns both the Whistler and Pemberton McDonald’s and to celebrate the Pemberton store’s first anniversary he’s going to sell 25-cent hamburgers for a week beginning March 22.

Last November Horler ran a 10-cent hamburger deal to celebrate the Whistler store’s 10 th anniversary and the response was incredible.

In one week Horler sold more than 15,000 hamburgers.

Locals and hundreds of new seasonal workers were leaving the Whistler McDonald’s with bags full of burgers; some were even freezing the burgers to eat later on.

Horler said he did not expect the same sort of reaction from the people of Pemberton because the customer base is smaller but he was sure McDonald’s "chief happiness officer" would draw a crowd.

Ronald McDonald was promoted to "chief happiness officer" last September after 40 years of service as the face of McDonald’s.

"Ronald McDonald is coming on the 24 th , which is a Saturday, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., so that should be great," Horler said.

"I’m not sure the reaction will be as great as Whistler but for us it’s about giving the community some great value and service.

"It’s a good way to thank the customers in Pemberton because it’s been an incredibly great year for us up there," he said. "Our sales have greatly surpassed what we projected."

While Pemberton is clearly a treasured asset for Horler it also holds a special place in the McDonald’s empire, because it’s the smallest town in western Canada to have a McDonald’s.

"I took a gamble with Pemberton but it’s paid off," Horler said.

"There’s a consistent highway traffic through there so that helps supplement our customer base… but just talking to developers up there you can see Pemberton is going to expand."
