Whistler K1’s top provincial championships

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club K1 team (ages 11 and 12) came away from the CIBC Wood Gundy B.C. Juvenile Series championships at Rossland last weekend with a lot to be proud of.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club K1 team (ages 11 and 12) came away from the CIBC Wood Gundy B.C. Juvenile Series championships at Rossland last weekend with a lot to be proud of.

The team earned six medals, with Brynne Benbow taking two gold medals and a silver in four races, Ian-Spence Morrison winning a gold medal and a silver, and Alexander Binks claiming a silver. Other WMSC skiers helped the team effort with solid top-15 results.

In the first women’s GS on Saturday morning, Brynne Benbow missed the gold medal by two-tenths of a second behind Alecia Willis of Cypress Bowl. Rachel Cohen of the Kimberley North Star Racers was third.

The WMSC’s Nancy Bayly just missed the bronze medal, finishing in fourth place. Other Whistler results include Emily Konantz in 10 th , Madison McLeish in 11 th , Chanelle Segal in 14 th and Heidi Mah in 15 th .

In the men’s race, Christopher Campbell of the Timberland Ski Club took the gold ahead of James Rose of the Windermere Valley Ski Club and Jasper Smith of Mount Washington. The WMSC’s Ian-Spence Morrison was fourth, Alexander Binks was 11 th and Isaac Penn tied for 14 th .

In the second women’s GS race Alecia Willis of Cypress earned her second gold medal, followed closely by Whistler’s Madison McLeish. Jacey Paton of Salmon Arm was third.

Once again Nancy Bayly was fourth for Whistler. Emily Konantz was seventh, Lindsay Jones 10 th and Chanelle Segal 13 th .

Ian-Spence Morrison won the second men’s race ahead of James Rose of Windermere and Jasper Smith of Mt. Washington. Alexander Binks was fourth for Whistler and Isaac Penn 11 th .

In the first of two slalom races on Sunday Brynne Benbow took her first gold by edging out Rachel Cohen of Kimberley and Alecia Willis of Cypress. Nancy Bayly was sixth, Taylor Green and Chanelle Segal tied for seventh, and Lindsay Jones was 11 th .

The men’s slalom went to Dawson Newman of Apex, followed by Whistler’s Alexander Binks and Andrew Skaien of Fernie. Ian-Spence Morrison was 12 th .

Brynne Benbow was strong again in the afternoon, winning the second slalom by more than a second. Alecia Willis was second and Rachel Cohen third. Nancy Bayly was fourth once again, tying Sarah Elliot of Big White. Madison McLeish was sixth, Chanelle Segal 12 th , Jenny Higgins 13 th and Heidi Mah 14 th .

The men’s race went to Andrew Skaien of Fernie, followed by the WMSC’s Ian-Spence Morrison. Cody Cuthill of Kimberley was third. Michael Cadman was 14 th to round out the top-15.
