Photo Search-ers chosen

The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s annual Pro Photographer Showdown, this year sponsored by electronics giant Panasonic, is one of the most anticipated events off the slopes.

Scheduled for April 22, this year’s Showdown is shaping up to be a doozy with the selection of L.A.-based skate, snow and rock ’n’ roll photographer Embry Rucker, Aussie surf shooter Jason Childs, and long-time snowboard photo-master Trevor Graves on the bill.

But adding to the intrigue of the event is the addition of a wildcard entry – the Best In Show winner of the Panasonic Pro Photographer Search occurring two days earlier.

This year’s Search finalists include Whistler local Crispin Cannon, Aussie ex-pat Jessica Mooney, Toronto’s Rich Odam, prairie boy Derek Frankowski, Vancouver’s Mike Remek and American Melissa McManus.

Contestants in both events prepare a nine-minute slideshow of their work to be presented at the 1,800-spectator capacity Telus Conference Centre, after which a panel of industry professionals will select the Best In Show.

This year’s Showdown contestants promise to be formidable opponents for the Search winner, but a wildcard win is not unprecedented in the contest’s seven year history. Whistler local Blake Jorgenson took both the Search and the Showdown in 2001.
