Dual GS wraps up KVRS

The eight-race Kokanee Valley Race Series wrapped up last Thursday, March 25 with a dual giant slalom on the Upper Dave Murray run.

Fresh snow and excellent conditions kept the numbers down, but the competition went on with a field of 40 racers.

In the last prize draw of the season the Atomic skis went to Sarah Plummer and the Suunto watch to John Evenson.

It was also the last chance for skiers earn points for the overall standings, and it came down to the wire in some categories. In the men’s 40 to 49 category, Scot Elder edged out Tom Jackson 498 points to 489. James Dodkin finished with 410 points to Dary Trevelyan’s 400 points in the men’s 19 to 29 group. Gar Robinson held off Werner Himmelsbach in the men’s 70-Plus category to win it 670 to 580. Bob Switzer won the men’s 60 to 69 category 665 to 640 for David Trussler. Just 58 points separated Butch White (655 ponts) from Paul Psutka (593) in the men’s 50 to 59 group.

If Rob Boyd hadn’t been at the K2 nationals last week with his racers, the men’s pro category would have been close as well. As it was fellow Whistler Mountain Ski Club K1 head coach Sead Causevic took the pro title with 450 points in five races to Boyd’s 360 in four races.

There are no more open alpine races on the Whistler-Blackcomb calendar this season, although all racers are invited to come out and watch Whistler’s K1 and K2 athletes (ages 11 to 14) compete in the Sierra Wireless Whistler Cup juvenile race series.

On Thursday, April 15 Whistler will be hosting its annual Mom’s Mountain Classic race for mothers and grandmothers of all ages and abilities. The format is a match time race, with the top spot going to the mom who’s second run time is the closest to her first run time.

Whistler-Blackcomb is offering 20 per cent off daycare and toddler programs and 50 per cent of all other Whistler Kids programs on that day. Pre-registration is required at any Guest Relations or Ski and Snowboard School Sales location.
