Whistler Classic turns 10

Large field expected for squash tournament

For the 10 th anniversary of the Whistler-Squamish Classic squash tournament this week, Rob Eberhard hopes to see a lot more locals on the court.

"In the past an average of 50 players (out of an average of 70) are from outside of Whistler and would enter every year, from the Lower Mainland, Seattle, Kelowna, all over the place. We’ve had visitors from England, Brazil, Kuwait, you name it," he said.

"I personally think that Whistler has always had a substantial number of very good squash players, because of the athletic type of community that Whistler is."

The tournament, which runs from Thursday, May 14 to Saturday May 16, offers eight different levels and categories for people to enter to ensure that everyone is against equal competition. The format is double knock-out, which means that all participants will get a minimum of two games while the top players in each category will play four or five matches.

"This is a good tournament for people to introduce themselves to tournament squash, it has more of a recreational environment," said Eberhard.

There is a pizza night on Friday for all participants and a reception on Saturday once the tournament has wrapped up.

The deadline for registration is this Saturday, May 8. You can get your spot online at www.squashbc.com, or by contacting organizer Ben Thomas at 604-935-1847.
