Parker returns to MY Place

Master class and piano concert planned for Sunday

Who: Ian Parker

Where: MY Place

When: Sunday, May 16

Tickets: $13

Canadian pianist Ian Parker makes a return visit to MY Place this Sunday.

Parker will host a master class for 26 pre-registered piano students from all ends of the Sea to Sky corridor in the afternoon, then finish the evening off with a solo concert performance.

Parker made two similar trips to Whistler in the spring and fall of 2002, though the upcoming master class is considerably larger this time around.

Raised in Vancouver, Parker relocated New York City a few years ago to study at the prestigious Julliard performing arts school.

A regular on CBC Radio Canada, he has performed as a soloist with most of Canada’s leading orchestras and has given recitals across North America, as well as Western Europe and Israel.

Parker has acquired a long list of scholarships, awards and honours over the course of his career to date. Of note are his first prize victory in the 2001 CBC National Radio Competition, and grand prizes at the Canadian National Music Festival, Corpus Christi International and Montreal Symphony Orchestra competitions. He is also a two-time winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition at Julliard.

Local piano teacher and event co-ordinator Jana Dupuis said Parker has the passion and patience required for a successful master class and that students will receive invaluable constructive feedback and performance tips from the seasoned soloist.

The class takes place throughout the afternoon from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and is open to the public for a $2 admission.

Later in the evening Parker will delight local classical music aficionados with a recital on the same stage. He is known to have an affinity for the dramatic works of the Romantic and Impressionist periods, citing Brahms as a favourite composer and earning accolades for his interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Ravel.

Tickets to the evening recital are $13. Parker takes the stage at 7 p.m.
