In fact the facilities exist locally for most of our garbage to be recycled or diverted from landfill. It’s just a matter of getting the word out about Zerowaste and how easy it is to achieve.
To give businesses added encouragement in moving towards this goal, the RMOW is funding a summer student to promote waste reduction in the Whistler valley. Marc Zurbuchen, a Simon Fraser University co-op and fourth year Psychology student, will be on hand for the entire summer as the RMOW Zerowaste Co-ordinator. He has been given the task of helping local businesses save money by wasting less.
Zurbuchen will be working under the umbrella of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Waste Watchers program, a program set up to promote waste reduction at home, work, and play. Zurbuchen will be hitting the pavement going from business to business offering free, one hour, consultation sessions to any establishment that wishes to hear some catered advice on waste reduction. All sessions will be offered free of charge.
A self-proclaimed garbage expert, Zurbuchen will also be targeting local construction companies as well as strata councils.
