More than 170 spawners counted

In the last few weeks volunteers have counted more than 170 Rainbow Trout spawners in seven local Creek systems, an increase over past years.

The Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group, which is sponsoring the weekly counts, credits the numbers to an increase in the number of volunteers and the frequency of the counts.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club counted 96 spawners to date in Jordan Creek, and no spawners in Whistler Creek. Phil Chew and Kevin Lofsky counted 17 in Write-Off Creek, Jim Cook counted 10 in Crabapple Creek, Dan McDonald counted 33 in Lakeside Creek, Lisa Helmer counted 21 in Scotia Creek and Veronica Woodruff one in Blackcomb Creek.

The spawning season will wrap up in the next few weeks, at which point the Whistler Fisheries Stewardship will compare their data with previous years to determine how stocks are doing, and whether there are any problems with specific local creeks that could be corrected with some stream work.
