Whistler Secondary gets ready to celebrate dry grad

Meadow Park Sports Centre will be transformed into an adventure playground this Saturday as Whistler Secondary’s Grade 12 class enjoys their dry grad.

Not only will they investigate whether it is safe to go back in the water while watching Jaws on a big screen at the pool, they will also be able to try their hand at Sumo wrestling, floor hockey, and jousting.

There will also be a temporary tattoo artist on hand, a massage therapist and a tarot card reader.

It’s likely there will be a long line up for the card reader as grads try to get a glimpse of their future including who will win a car, the grand prize give away for the dry grad.

The vehicle is being donated by Joe Maika of Local Automotive Sales.

"It’s a great way to give back to the community," said Maika.

"I can’t think of a better cause to support since they are the future of our community."

To claim their prize, said youth outreach worker and co-dry grad organizer Greg McDonnell, kids will have to stay until the bitter end.

"We won’t be drawing the name until about 4:30 a.m.," he said and the youth has to be present to claim the prize.

As well as the adventure games the grads will also be treated to a reggae band and music spun by DJ Kef.

And for those who find time there will be a quiet lounge complete with mocktail bar – thanks to donations by Nesters.

When the munchies hit the grads will be able to enjoy a traditional Whistler favourite, sushi, all night long.

And for those left standing the Wildwood Café will be catering breakfast first thing in the morning.

"It’s grown significantly," said McDonnell, who will be spending his spare time Saturday decorating the sports centre, which is being donated by the RMOW, with black velour drapery.

"I’m really happy to see this level of youth buy-in."

There are lots of other prizes, donated by local companies such as Canski and Zero Ceiling, to be won as well.
