Pemberton airline proposal gets support from major hotels

A proposal for regular air service into Pemberton, presented to Pemberton council two weeks ago, has been endorsed by several of the major hotels in Whistler.

Blaine Haug from Prime Air said last week that he would be approaching many of the big hotels in Whistler in a bid to pre-sell seats on an air service which he wants to start between Pemberton and Seattle on Nov. 1.

Haug has joined forces with Voyager Airlines, developers Ventana Construction, restaurateur Lawrence Black and fixed base operators Galvin Air Services from Seattle to pitch the proposal to Pemberton council.

The council is due to give a decision on this proposal within the next two weeks.

Haug now needs the support of the hotels and other major players, such as Tourism Whistler and Resort Reservations, to ensure that people can access the service when it starts.

Monica Hayes from the Westin Resort and Spa said the hotel’s management had not seen anything formal yet but she agreed it was a "marvelous idea".

"Anything that opens up Whistler and makes it easier to go to and from the area is great news," said Hayes.

"This has come up several times over the past few years but I suspect now 2010 is driving some of these decisions, which is even better."

General Manager of the Four Seasons, Scott Taber, said he would also support any initiative that endeavours to bring guests to Whistler faster.

CEO of Galvin Air Services Peter Anderson said that after 15 years of deliberating there was a general confidence that the air service was going to happen now.

"After 15 years, there is an opportunity here for a definitive decision and I believe the pieces are in place it make it a meaningful one," said Anderson.
