Museum offers kids, parents summer relief

It’s a familiar right of spring. When the school bell rings for the last time in June kids run from class, prepared to take up all the opportunities promised by a seemingly endless summer.

The first few weeks are packed, from early morning cartoons to late night sleepovers. The days just aren’t long enough. There are lakes and water-parks to visit, games to play, tadpoles to catch and trampolines to bounce on.

But every summer there comes a time when kids run out of things to do and the refrain becomes all too familiar.

"Mom, dad, I’m bored. What should I do?"

This year, thanks to the Whistler Museum and Archives, parents might just have an answer. At least on four Summer Sundays.

Designed for youth age 5-12 and their families, Summer Sundays are comprised of four one-hour workshops held at the Whistler Museum and Archives on two Sundays in July and two Sundays in August, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

On July 11, Whistler bear guru Michael Allen will host "Bear Paws," a workshop that will discuss Whistler black bears and allow participants to make their own plaster cast of a real bear paw.

Parks Planner Martin Pardoe will help participants get their bearings with Map Explorers on July 25. Pardoe will teach map reading and drawing skills and lead an outdoor mapping expedition.

Budding builders and designers will be put to the test at the Lego Building Challenge on Aug. 8, sponsored by toy-man Stephen Henderson of Great Games and Toys.

On Aug. 22, photographer Leanna Rathkelly will teach camera use, lighting, composition, and lead an outdoor photography activity at Shoot and Score!

Programming co-ordinator Jimi Galvao is enthusiastic about the summer workshops. "Cultivating a sense of wonder is always central to what museums do. As a community museum, it’s satisfying for us to be able to provide programming that gives kids a chance to discover, learn, and be entertained in a hands-on, interactive, and affordable way," he said.

Admission is $5 per child or $12 for a family of three children or more. The option of registering for all four programs at a discounted rate is also available, at $15 per child or $40 for a family of three children or more.

Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Bookings can be made by calling the Museum at 604-932-2019 or by e-mailing info@whistlermuseum.org

Starting July 1, the museum will be open daily until the end of August. Visit www.whistlermuseum.org for information on other exhibits, programs, and special events.
