Kidsport levels the playing field<

Strut Your Stuff taking applications from community groups

For eight years, Kidsport has been bridging the gap between rich and poor and Whistler by giving all kids an opportunity to get involved in sports and clubs in the community through donations and grants.

Seeing the economic disparity that existed in the community, the Whistler Community Services Society, parks and recreation, and the community sport organizations formed a partnership to ensure that kids wouldn’t be left out because of financial need.

Kidsport Whistler’s motto is "So all Kids can Play", and so far it’s working. Every year between 30 and 50 kids apply for grants to help cover the cost of registration in sports and purchase equipment, using money contributed by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and various fundraisers. One hundred per cent of the money raised goes directly to the children.

The program was so successful that other towns and cities across Canada have adopted similar community-based models, including 13 municipalities in B.C.

Grant applications for Kidsport Whistler will once again be available at the annual Strut Your Stuff Fall Community Registration Fair on Saturday, Sept. 11. This year the fair will take place at Spring Creek Community Centre, due to the ongoing construction at the high school.

Strut Your Stuff is now registering community organizations for the fair, which gives parents a chance to sign up for a variety of different groups and activities in one place at one time. A small fee is charged to cover advertising costs and the setup, and groups are encouraged to get creative with their displays by offering games, videos, and demonstrations.

In addition, the Whistler Minor Hockey Association and Whistler Figure Skating Club will be offering an equipment exchange at the fair. Bring your gear at 9 a.m.
