Whistler downhillers top Canada Cup

Five locals medal at Sun Peaks

Whistler riders were a factor in the Canada Cup finals at Sun Peaks last weekend, winning three medals in the downhill events and two medals in cross-country against the biggest field of the year.

Some 135 riders took part in the downhill race, despite the rain and mud.

Tyler Morland, the B.C. Champion, finished second in the men’s downhill with a strong ride down the long and technical course. His final time of five minutes, 27.91 seconds was 5.27 seconds behind Dustin Adams, who made the most out of his home field advantage. Eric Goss of New Brunswick was third in 5:28.14.

Also from Whistler, Mike Jones was 11 th in 5:35.96 and Adam Billinghurst 12 th in 5:38.93. From Squamish, Shaums March was 10 th and J.J. Desormeaux 17 th out 38 starters. Adam Cook did not finish after injuring his ribs in a crash.

In the women’s event, two Whistler riders made the podium. Brook Baker, the B.C. Champion, finished a close second with a time of 5:55.64, just 2.15 seconds back of Danika Schroeter. Claire Buchar finished third in 6:13.57.

In the cross-country competition, the top three elite men were Max Plaxton, followed by Ricky Federau and Peter Wedge. Trish Sinclair was the top female, followed by Mical Dyck and Danelle Kabush.

Whistler’s James Crowe was eighth in the Junior Expert Men’s race, competing against riders two and three years older. Three of the riders ahead of Crowe were also chosen to represent Canada at the World Championships in September.

Trevor Hopkins was third in the Master 30-39 Expert Men’s race, finishing just over a minute behind the leader.

Mike Charuk was fourth in the Master 40 to 49 Expert race.

Brandon Semenuk was second in the Under 15 men’s race, less than two minutes back of the leader.

Calindy Ramsden was third in the Under 15 women’s race.

The next test for Whistler riders is the B.C. Cup championships at Mount Washington this weekend.
