Some high quality security camera footage helped the Whistler RCMP to apprehend two suspects that were passing off counterfeit money.

According to the RCMP, they first received the report on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when a local business discovered that they had been passed a fake $50 bill. After examining the tape, the RCMP was able to provide copies of the footage to members of the force.

The following day the RCMP identified and apprehended the suspects, who were identified as a 67-year-old male and a 48-year-old female from Vancouver. When they were apprehended they had approximately $1,090 in counterfeit bills on them in $100, $50, $20, $10, $5 and US$1 denominations. A large number of blank and filled cheques from Vancouver businesses were also found.

The RCMP remind local businesses to:

• Make an investment in a high quality surveillance system;

• Take caution when dealing with cash transactions, and notify the RCMP immediately if money is suspected as counterfeit;

• Train staff to identify counterfeit money and to take suspect descriptions.
