Beginners welcome for Squash League

The Whistler Squash League is looking for beginners to fill out their ranks this season, with 14 teams ready to go this Sunday, Oct. 10.

Every co-ed team has five players, from the top Level 1 player to the beginner Level 5s. At the end of every season, most of the Level 5s move up a level or two, opening the door for new beginner players.

The league runs until March, with games taking place on Sundays. Each game is about 45 minutes long, but if you can’t make games, the players have the option of rescheduling to another time during the week.

It costs $155 to join the league, which includes a free lesson, a dryfit shirt, tickets to club social events, and passes to Meadow Park for all 17 games. Players need racquets, the proper footwear, and enough squash experience to hit the ball.

You can sign up at Meadow Park, or by contacting league administrator Ben Thomas at benwhistler@yahoo.com.

Soccer teams continue to shine

Whistler’s youth soccer teams are holding their own in the Squamish Youth Soccer League this season, putting in another strong weekend.

The senior girls team played a tough game against Squamish to win 6-2, but the score doesn’t tell the whole story. Squamish didn’t make it easy, attacking for the entire game and playing tough defense.

The Whistler team was bolstered by the return of Alison Leighton, Danielle Robson and Lilly Baker from a ski training camp in Chile, and the efforts of players like Amanda Marsh, who stayed in for the entire game, and Chantal Rey, who kept the Squamish defense on their heels with her speed up front. Special mention goes to the team’s youngest players Jenya Dudley and Nancy Bayly, who played to the level of the older girls.

The senior girls’ team is coached by Bernard Messeguer.

The senior boys team also had a strong game, shutting out Squamish to win 7-0. The teams started even, but Whistler found its groove part-way through the first half and four different players scored for the team; Mateo Hernandez, Jerry McArthur, Steve Romanin and Francois Ligeti. McArthur, Romanin and Hernandez added goals in the second half, while the defense worked hard to rob the Squamish players of any scoring chances throughout the game.

The senior boys team is coached by Shaun Hughes.

The Whistler Youth Soccer League and Pemberton Youth Soccer League joined the Squamish League this year, which also gave them a membership in the provincial association. Not only does that create more competition, with more than 1,200 players on dozens of teams, it also allows the teams to enter and host more sanctioned tournaments.

Whistler soccer hosts Thanksgiving tournament

The Whistler Youth Soccer League is hosting a Thanksgiving tournament this Saturday at Myrtle Philip for the Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10 age groups. Teams from North Vancouver and West Vancouver have signed up, as well as local teams.

Next year organizers hope to make it a corridor tournament, and grow it over the years to include more teams from the Lower Mainland.

The first games get underway at 9:30 a.m. and the tournament run all day. Umbrellas are recommended for spectators.
