As of Wednesday, Dec. 1

For the areas adjacent to the Whistler-Blackcomb ski area.

The Avalanche Danger rating on Dec. 1 is MODERATE, however, a weather system forecast for Friday, Dec. 3 could quickly increase the hazard to Considerable.

There is currently little snow below treeline, a shallow snowpack at treeline and areas of up to 1.5 metres of snow in the alpine. A rain crust has been formed up to 2,100 metres, with recent cool temperatures forming small facets above and below it. Light snow has buried what base there is, including small surface hoar and the near surface crust and facets.

The areas of the alpine with sufficient snowpack to avalanche are mostly limited to lee areas above 1,900 metres. Isolated start zones at treeline also have been sufficiently loaded to avalanche. All potential avalanche terrain is flush with terrain traps ranging from rocks and trees to large crevasses and areas of morraine.

The forecast weather system on Friday could significantly increase the load over the weakening surface layers causing a significant increase in the avalanche hazard.

Pay attention to the weather and call 604-938-6003 for daily avalanche hazard ratings, and pray for snow.
