Christmas comes early for Whistler skaters

The Christmas season came early for the Whistler Skating Clubs, with several athletes coming home with medals from the annual Jingle Blades Competition at Centennial Arena in White Rock.

The skating took place over three days, Nov. 26-28, with hundreds of athletes from around the Lower Mainland participating in dozens of age and skill categories.

On Friday, four Whistler skaters competed. Broderick Thompson, competing in the Preliminary Men’s group, finished first.

Deb Cobon was second in the Gold Ladies category.

In the Pre-preliminary Ladies 10 and Under group, Georgia Baker was fourth in Group 1, while Eilley Harwood was 10 th in Group 6.

Rebekah Robertson posted the top result on Saturday, finishing fourth in the Elementary Ladies 9 and Under group. Savanah Pantages was 10 th in the same category.

Sam Blair was eighth in the Pre-introductory Interpretive contest.

On Sunday, Lisa Nakajima finished first in the Preliminary Ladies 10 and Under in Group Two. Samantha Shrimpton was sixth in the same category in Group One.

In the Preliminary Ladies 11 and Over, Katelyn McKeever was fifth in Group One, Hilary Ilses was second in Group Two, Marielle Thompson was third in Group Three, Ariel Harwood was 10 th in Group Four, Annelise Hutchison was second in Group Five, and Verena Facundo was third in Group Six.

Melissa Smith also finished third in the Senior Bronze Ladies category.

Club hosts Christmas Carnival

The Whistler Skating Club is hosting its annual Christmas Carnival at Meadow Park arena Thursday, Dec. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Skaters from the club will lead off by showcasing their skills in a Christmas-themed performance. Afterwards you can join the skaters on the ice for a carnival, with a skating Santa, food and beverages, and prizes. Admission is by donation.
