Liberals to nominate a successor to Nebbeling

Card-carrying Liberals in West Vancouver-Garibaldi will decide next week on a successor for MLA Ted Nebbeling, who is retiring at next May’s provincial election.

Joan McIntyre-Pottinger and Tim Duholke are the only people in the race to replace Nebbeling as the West Vancouver-Garibaldi Liberal candidate.

McIntyre-Pottinger is a market researcher and the founder of the polling company McIntyre & Mustel Research Associates in West Vancouver. She is a former riding association president who has two children. She also owns a condo unit in Whistler.

Dulholke is an established chartered accountant, a lecturer and entrepreneur that has had business interests in clothing manufacturing, lumber and the telecommunications industry. He is also a father of two.

Dave Davenport, president of the West Vancouver-Garibaldi riding association, said he was surprised more Liberals did not run, but he conceded that the strength of the nominated candidates would have deterred other hopefuls.

"I am surprised that there wasn’t more (nominees) at the end of the day but my guess is that it’s because she’s (McIntyre-Pottinger) such a strong candidate and has been campaigning so strongly," said Davenport.

The stakes are high in West Vancouver-Garibaldi because it is a strong Liberal riding and the lead-up to the Olympics will ensure that the area has one of the highest profiles in B.C.

"I think the real importance for this nomination is recognizing that the B.C. Liberals are strong in this area and that the person nominated here is likely to be in government for the next four years," said Davenport.

Voting takes place over three days in Squamish, Whistler and West Vancouver. Voting begins at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Sea to Sky Hotel in Squamish. Whistler Liberals can vote on Dec. 15th at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., while West Vancouver Liberals can vote on Dec. 16th at the Caulfield Elementary School at the same times.

Davenport said party members must bring two pieces of identification to vote and the identification must contain a picture and a residential address that matches the address on the Liberal membership list.
