Nativity play offers a cure for consumer-itis

The Whistler Village Church is putting a Whistler-spin on an English folk tale in their upcoming annual nativity production.

Robin Finds Christmas centres around a bird that discovers the true meaning of the season after one of his favourite perches is cut down for a Christmas tree.

The script was adapted by Linda McGaw.

The play is being touted as a cure for "Christmas-induced consumer-itis" and "jaded spirits," regardless of religious affiliation.

"I think a lot of people are trying to get away from the commercial side of Christmas and celebrate the honesty and the kindness and the generosity and all those values we all aspire to," said organizer Susan Shrimpton.

The play begins at 6:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. A family service with music, readings and carols will follow the play. Admission is by donation and a drop box will be available for contributions to the Whistler Food Bank.

The Whistler Village Church will host a traditional Christmas Eve carol service later in the evening at 10:30 p.m.

Other Christmas Eve caroling events and services in the upcoming days include public carols sings with the Whistler Chorus (high-school members of the Whistler Children’s Chorus) at the Delta Suites on Tuesday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Dec. 23. The Chorus will also perform for the public with the Whistler Singers in the town centre on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Both the Chorus and the Whistler Singers will take part in the 19 th annual Christmas Eve carol service at the Whistler Conference Centre on Friday, Dec. 24 at 6:30 p.m. The interdenominational service also features readings by community members.
