Return of the Doug

It’s an annual Whistler phenomenon with a local profile akin to the migration of Canada geese – the return of Guitar Doug.

The legendary longhaired rocker known as the Daddy-o of the Patio has been in this area since 1986 and over the years has elevated the afternoon party known as après-ski to an art form.

The ultimate ski-bum, Doug vacates these parts in the off-season, working his way around Europe, Thailand and other exotic locales with guitar in hand.

But when the ski season really kicks in, he can’t stay away. Welcome him back, or experience his music for the first time on Christmas Eve at Merlin’s – home to some of his most infamous sets over the years.

Sunday, Dec. 26 he’ll be raising pints at Dusty’s, harmonizing with partner Grateful Greg as the Hairfarmers. Monday through Thursday he’ll add a Celtic/bluegrass twist to his good time guitar tunes playing with Shannon Saunders of the Splinters at the Dubh Linn Gate Pub.

And on New Year’s Eve he and Greg are back at Merlin’s for another "Endless Après" starting in the afternoon and continuing through the wee hours of 2005.

Whistler ‘orphans’ offered a Merry Fistmas

The Garibaldi Lift Co. is opening its doors and its arms on Christmas Day.

Saturday night resident DJ Mr. Fister and friends are presenting Merry Fistmas – a Christmas away from home for Whistlerites who are missing their families or those looking for whimsical holiday fun.

The pyjama party event features a turkey dinner special, X-Mas movie by Heavy Hitting Films (be prepared, this will not be your standard Christmas special) and an optional $5 gift exchange. The room will be decorated by Shits n Giggles, the same creative minds behind the GLC’s epic Halloween bash last October. Mr. Fister will be on the decks throwing the odd Christmas tune into his eclectic rock, funk, breakbeat and electro music mix.

Tickets are $19.95 and include dinner. For more information call the club at 604-905-2220.
