Wet weather wreaks havoc

• In North Vancouver, the rain triggered a mudslide that swept two homes down an embankment early Wednesday morning.

One man is in critical condition after being pulled out of the wreckage by rescuers, and his wife is still missing. Others made a narrow escape. Residents of 70 other homes in the area were evacuated, while Solicitor General Rich Coleman issued a state of emergency for North Vancouver.

• Vancouver harbour was flooded with sewage when the high volume of rain swamped sewage treatment facilities.

• In Richmond, which is a metre below sea level, crews were preparing to fill sandbags along the dykes Wednesday if water levels continued to rise. There are also reports of flooded areas throughout the city.

• Outside Keremeos in B.C.’s southern Interior, about 100 residents have been evacuated by the Provincial Emergency Program after ice jams blocked the river, which flooded its banks.

• Rain, wind and concerns over flooding on the access road have prompted the indefinite closure of Mount Baker in Washington state.

• Rain forced the cancellation of disabled World Cup skiing events at Kimberley Mountain Resort in the eastern part of the province.

• According to WORCA president Grant Lamont, whole sections of the popular Whistler bike trail A River Runs Through It are under water. The club will increase funding for trail maintenance to repair the damage if it’s required.
