Residential subdivision gets council nod

At long last plans are moving ahead for a residential subdivision on the shores of Alta Lake.

The Mount Whistler Lodge development will bring 22 single family market homes, eight multi-family units and 11 employee housing units in Alta Vista, south of Lakeside Park.

The land has had these development rights for more than 20 years.

There is a lingering concern for one councillor about the proposed development. Councillor Ken Melamed questioned the value of the six mandatory employee housing suites within six single family homes. He said that despite the municipality's best efforts, there is no way to ensure homeowners will put those suites in the employee housing pool.

"The covenant that we came up with was a best effort but not iron clad," said Melamed.

Despite these concerns, Melamed also added that he did not want to hold up the project in any way.

The mandatory suites were part of the development proposal in 2001, when it was approved by the council of the day. Construction was then delayed due to internal shareholder issues.

Mount Whistler Lodge stills needs third and final reading from council before it can officially move forward.
