Top golfers confirmed for Skins Game

Vijay Singh, the number one ranked golfer in the world with nine victories in the past year, and long-hitter John Daly have confirmed their participation in the Telus Skins Game at Nicklaus North Golf Course, July 3-5.

The other two players in the field are expected to be announced in the next few weeks. Tickets for the event, which sold out in less than an hour the last time the facility hosted the Skins, will be available in April.

Spots open for shortened Peak to Valley

After being delayed by over a month due to the snow conditions on the lower mountain, the Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race is set to take place next Friday and Saturday, March 11-12. Because of the change of dates some spots have opened up for the race, which sold out last July. Teams can register at any Whistler-Blackcomb Guest Relations location.

The course will also be shorter. In past years the course has run from the top of the saddle to Creekside with more than 180 giant slalom gates on the way down. Skiers often collapse from exhaustion and cramps at the finish line.

This year the course will be shorter, beginning on the saddle and finishing just below Highway 86 at an area known as Vuarnet Road. The last time the race finished in this spot was in 1994.

Whistler riders on Squamish Team

The Squamish Off Road Cycling Association has announced the members for the club’s inaugural Team Squamish, a group of mountain bikers created to promote the sport and encourage development in the community. The club is sponsored by Corsa Cycles and Tantalus Bike Shop and Greg Gardner GM.

"We’ve got many local businesses that have bought into the concept and are supporting Team Squamish," said SORCA president Cliff Miller. "We’re able to use that support and provide training for the young racers and pay some race entry fees for the riders."

From Whistler, the elite team includes James Crowe, one of the top junior expert riders in the province, and World Cup veteran Lisa Dickson. Other members on the team include Ryan Edwards Meghan Kindree, Kyle Ritchie and Heather Rochetta.

The development team includes Gavin Arnott, Jonathan Aubry, Chris Bandy, Gordon Booth, Philip Cairns, Christie Cunneyworth, Michel Demers, Danielle Dornik, Jordan Drinovz, Kyle Fortin, Drew Gosnall, Harrison Gould, Lauren Hughes, Daniel MacKellar, Jaclyn McClements, Michael Mee, Aislinn Merkel, Miranda Millar, Molly Patteson, Kyle Salter and Kyla Valleau.

Team Squamish has already started training on the road, and is preparing for the beginning of the cross-country and downhill racing seasons at the end of March.

Challenge Cup looking for teams

The Disabled Skiers Association of B.C. is hosting its 22 nd annual Challenge Cup on Sunday, March 6 on Whistler Mountain. The theme for the event is "The Amazing Race", and teams of three able-bodied skiers will be matched up with a disabled athlete. The contest gets underway at 10 a.m. with three events – a dual slalom, and a pair of challenges called "Road Blocks" and "Detours".

Last year the event raised $10,000 for learn-to-ski programs, instructor clinics and the purchase of specialized equipment.

Spots are still open in this year’s event. For more information contact Penny Bartel at 604-737-3038, or disabledskier@telus.net. You can also learn more about the Challenge Cup at www.disabledskiingbc.com.
