Backcountry Advisory

As of Wednesday, March 23

Alpine: CONSIDERABLE

Treeline: MODERATE

Below Treeline: BELOW THRESHOLD

Travel Advisory: Two days of reverse wind loading is adding variety to the surface of our recently revived snowpack. Pockets of windslab are loading rapidly into usual windward terrain and areas of the surface in usual lee start zones are being pressed into hard slabs as well.

Avalanche Activity: Avalanches ranging from numerous size 1 and 2 soft slabs to a few large size 2.5 to 3 slabs have run naturally and with both explosive and ski testing throughout the south coast area since Monday. Some of the observed avalanche activity has been triggered remotely, especially from rocky areas.

Snowpack: 30 to 60 cm of storm snow is sitting on a very hard and slick melt-freeze crust. This melt-freeze crust is thin and is sitting over facet crystals in some areas. As previously mentioned, windslabs are forming on the surface. Be aware of the possibility of deep slab avalanches on the early March crust.

Weather: A ridge of high pressure will bring sunny weather and strengthening outflow winds over the day. A weak upper trough may move in by Thursday bringing cloud and a chance of flurries.
