Blackcomb freestylers on top of provincials

Organizers overcome ice, snow to host event

After weeks of work to cut a moguls course into the icy Catskinner run, a weekend blizzard created more work for organizers and parent volunteers at the provincial freestyle championships last weekend.

Despite the delays, they managed to get off all three events, the single moguls on Saturday, dual moguls on Sunday and the big air on Monday.

All of the effort was worth it for the host Blackcomb Freestyle Club, which saw several of its skiers on the podium against strong clubs from Silver Star, Big White, Kimberley, Apex, Prince George, Revelstoke and Vancouver.

In the single moguls, the Blackcomb Freestyle Club’s Keltie Hicks took the Youth Ladies provincial title after some trouble in her first run.

Simon Louwe won the silver medal for Youth Men.

Devon Krainer took the bronze in the Juvenile Ladies, while Tom McKay won silver for Juvenile Men. Tom Holley was just shy of the podium in fourth place.

In the Junior Men’s category, Eddie Hicks won the gold medal by more than three points, while his teammate Cameron Doyle claimed the bronze.

In the Senior Men’s event Tadashi Akutsu and Taisuke Tatenake won gold and silver for the BFC.

Other club members came close to the podium. Kerry-Anne Hamilton was sixth in Youth Ladies against girls three years older. Will Fedorko was seventh in the extremely competitive Juvenile Men’s category, and Takanori Shibabuki was fifth among Junior Men.

In the dual moguls on Sunday, Keltie Hicks won gold once again in the Youth Ladies category, while Simon Louwe was third for the youth men.

Devon Krainer won a gold in the Juvenile Women’s title. Tom McKay won third for the Juvenile Men.

Eddie Hicks added another gold medal to his collection in the Junior Men’s competition.

The freestyle nationals get underway this week in Quebec.
