Whistler’s Après restaurant and wine bar will feature jazz saxaphone/flute player Paul Choisil for two nights this weekend.
A native of Haiti now based in Vancouver, Choisil has an extensive background in Latin music. His current repertoire consists of light jazz with a Latin/Caribbean flavour.
Choisil will perform in the Après dining room on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2. For more information call 604-935-0200.
Franke and Toolshed at Dusty’s
On Friday night Dusty’s is hosting eclectic groove-jazz/world fusion quartet Stephen Franke and Noises from the Toolshed – a.k.a. bass player Ryland Haggis, drummer Brent Norman and Chris Van Sickle on keyboards.
The Victoria-based band describes their sound as "part hard bop jazz and New Orleans rock/funk with a dash of zydeco and a strong leaning to Latin rhythms." An eclectic roster of influences includes Django Reinhardt, Charlie Hunter, John Coltrane, Bela Fleck, Astor Piazolla and Tom Waits.
The band released their debut album Songs for a Platinum Blonde Diner Waitress , in 2004 and has graced the stage at the Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver jazz festivals. The show at Dusty’s is free with doors at 9 p.m.
There’s more jazz this week in Whistler. Local funk/dub/jazz trio Kaejema jams out at the GLC on Wednesday, April 6, and the hardest working piano man in Whistler, Cameron Chu continues to tickle the ivories nightly at the Bearfoot Bistro.
