Olympic officials check on 2010 Games progress

Co-ordination commission visited Vancouver this week

Members of the International Olympic Committee’s co-ordination commission were in Vancouver this week to get an update on preparations for the 2010 Winter Games.

"It’s to see the (VANOC) team, as most of the executive team has been in place since just last summer," said 2010 Vancouver Organizing Committee spokesman Sam Corea.

"We are in a state of evolution and I think we always will be right up to the event in 2010, but we have formed a lot of plans since last year’s visit (of the IOC Co-ordination Commission)."

The commission last visited Whistler and Vancouver in April 2004.

Members were to visit the new Richmond site of the 2010 speed skating oval, said Corea.

They were also to meet with representatives of the four First Nations involved with the Games, get briefed on the venues due to start construction this summer – the Whistler Sliding Centre and the Whistler Nordic Centre, and find out the latest on the preparations for the athletes villages in Whistler and Vancouver.

They also received updates from each department of VANOC, including finance, accommodation and planning, security and competition and non-competition venues.

They did not visit Whistler this time.

As the Games draw closer the co-ordination commission will increase the frequency of their visits.

The commission acts as a liaison between the IOC, VANOC, the National Olympic Committees and the international sport federations. Its members include representatives if the IOC the sports federations the NOCs and an athlete representative as well as experts in the fields of media, environment and TV technology.
