This Thursday, May 5, some of WhistlerÕs finest will be recognized by the Sport B.C. Community Sport Heroes program for their contributions. Some are athletes, some are coaches, and some are the volunteers that keep sports organizations up and running.
Community members were asked to submit nominations for the awards to Sport B.C., who made the final decisions.
The winners are:
Mae Palm Ñ Ironman champion, marathoner
John Benbow Ñ Whistler Mountain Ski Club board of directors
Phil Chew Ñ Coach and co-ordinator for B.C. Disabled Ski Team
Chuck Gage Ñ B.C. Golf Association
Sheila Mozes Ñ Whistler Gymnastics Club, Kidsport
Bob Calladine Ñ Whistler Youth Soccer Club
WhistlerÕs Tyler Mosher will also receive the Harry Jerome Comeback Award. Mosher won the award back in March as part of Sport B.C.Õs annual athlete of the year awards, but was still training in Europe and could not attend the ceremony.
Mosher is working to earn a spot on the disabled cross-country ski team with a goal of representing Whistler at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games, and is also working with the Canadian Snowboard Federation to bring adaptive snowboarding to the World Cup and Paralympics.
The Community Sport Heroes awards will be presented on Thursday, May 5 at the Brewhouse, starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
