2005 Banff Mountain Film Festival calls for entries

30th annual event to offer $18,000 in prize money

The 30 th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival has issued an international call for submissions.

The festival awards winners in eight categories including the Grand Prize and awards for Best Films on Climbing, Mountain Sports, Mountain Environment, Mountain Culture, Best Short Mountain Film (15 minutes or less) and Best Feature-length Mountain Film (70 minutes or more). There is also a People’s Choice Award voted by the audience. This year’s event will award more than $18,000 Cdn in prize money.

The long-running festival has an international flavour, with more than 300 films from 38 countries participating in the 2004 event. The lineup included Weekend Warrio r – a quirky comedic short by Whistler’s filmmaker/go-go dancer/DJ Ace MacKay-Smith.

Along with a continuous roster of film and video screenings, the festival features an international speaker series, panel discussions, a filmmaker seminar, adventure trade fair, artisan market and indoor climbing wall.

The deadline for film submissions is Friday, Aug. 5. The 2005 Banff Mountain Film Festival runs Oct. 29—Nov. 6 at the Banff Centre.

Sister festival seeking book entries

The 2005 Banff Mountain Book Festival has also issued a call for entries to its 12 th annual international book competition.

The festival is seeking "mountain stories of exploration and discovery."

Submissions will be judged by an international jury and awards presented in four categories: Mountain Literature, Mountain Exposition, Mountain Image and Adventure Travel, as well as an additional Grand Prize for best overall book.

The festival also features guest speakers, readings, seminars, a book fair, signings and launches. Confirmed guests at this year’s event include renowned mountaineer/adventurers Karsten Heuer, Arlene Blum, Helen Thayer, Jim Perrin and Andy Cave.

Books eligible for the competition must have been published after January 1, 2004 and must be in English, with the exception of books submitted to the "Mountain Image" category, which will accept all languages. The deadline for submission has been set for July 15, 2005 with an extended deadline of August 15 for books published after June 30.

The 2005 Banff International Book Festival runs concurrent with the 2005 Banff Mountain Film Festival Oct. 29-Nov. 6 at the Banff Centre.
