As the success of a certain golden-haired Aussie surf hobbit has proven, Whistler loves a good didgeridoo performance.
It’s good news for the members of Ganga Giri — a "modern/primitive" organic/electronic ensemble featuring enigmatic didgeridoo player Ganga that is coming through Whistler on Wednesday.
Like the aforementioned golden surf hobbit (Xavier Rudd for the few who weren’t at the outdoor show last April) Ganga Giri hail from the land down unda’ – Byron Bay to be specific.
As well as Ganga’s didg, the band’s incorporates a variety of world beat percussive instruments into their shows including congas, djembe, bougarabou, Nigerian talking drum, mbira and more, giving them a unique profile in the dance music community.
The innovative ensemble has built a following all over the world with vibrant live performances that often include traditional aboriginal dancers, although there will not be any dancers for the Whistler show.
Regardless, the spectacle that is Ganga Giri is enough without them. The group’s sound has been described as a "unique tribal-technological deep earth dance experience. Explosive and pulsating, at times ambient and flowing… a pumping, percussive multi-layered experience of complex grooves and raw, deep, natural sound," presided over by a spiritual guide described as an "inspired musical creator whose passion brings people together in celebration of nowness in newness."
Intriguing, to say the least, and definitely a dance music experience in a different category than the DJ at the decks on club night.
